NOVEMBER 2007 - AMY POLLOCK

Amy has played a huge part in the success of the NCEWHA and the Carolina Fury. When she first started working with MDA, I made some contact with her and she had announcements put in the MDA Newsletters. That is how Josh Cranfill and Robert Rusch found out about our team. They were the first 2 recruits and now Josh is the VP of the organization. After we went to Minnesota in 2004, I went to Wilmington to meet with Amy and showed her pictures from our trip. She has truly been a great ambassador of the sport since that day. Each year when we aren't at a tournament, we have a Powerhockey demonstration at MDA Camp, which is something that Amy started. I think we would have eventually done that on our own, but Amy really made it a lot easier. She also keeps me informed of events that MDA is having and makes sure that I am there to let people know about Powerhockey. At these events she also actively recruits players for us and talks to the families. Everyone in the MDA family trusts Amy, so when she tells them that Powerhockey is good for their child, they normally listen. Amy really understands our goals and really believed in us when the organization was just an idea. She is definitely deserving of this honor.

MORE ABOUT AMY

Thank you so much for this honor. I really can't believe you selected me as I know there are many unsung heroes you work with - your family, the other members of the team, volunteers who help at the games, and of course, you.

So here's a little about me -

I've been with MDA for a little over 4 years as the Health Care Services Coordinator for the Coastal Carolinas MDA office. My responsibilities include: fundraising - Lock Ups, Fill the Boot with the firefighters, Shamrocks, and Stride & Ride (a walk to raise community awareness about neuromuscular diseases); and Health Care Services - meeting and registering newly diagnosed individuals, attending the MDA clinic at Wilmington Health Associates and working with the clinic team to provide the best care possible to our families, linking families to community resources, connecting families to other families served by MDA, planning and attending MDA Summer Camp, and recruiting future team members for the Carolina Fury : )

On a personal note, I moved to Wilmington about 5 years ago from New York City. I am the oldest of five and my siblings affectionately call me "2nd mom" as I have a tendency to watch over and perhaps nag them. I've done a variety of things - I taught kindergarten in Houston, Texas, was an Activities Assistant in West Bloomfield, Michigan, lived in Morocco as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and was a tour manager on a small cruise ship that sailed mainly in the Mediterranean. I enjoy reading, running, gardening, playing tennis, and walking my dog, Buster. I enjoy living in North Carolina for many reasons including the weather, the access to both the beach and the mountains, and the amazing people I've met like you, Jonathan.

Thanks again Jonathan. I am truly touched.

Peace,
Amy
