Coaches Corner - Learn From Watching

Learn From Watching:

The easiest way to learn the game of hockey is to watch games on television. Take the time to actually listen to the announcers during the game as they try to explain things to you. John Forslund and Tripp Tracy of the Carolina Hurricanes are really good about explaining the game as it unfolds because they understand that North Carolina is a growing market for hockey. They are also employees of the Hurricanes and spend the entire week with the team and coaches. Therefore, they are explaining the team strategy and not just giving the audience their opinion.

Watching games will get you accustomed to the terminology and speed of the game, which will help you make quicker decisions when you get to your first practice. This will impress your coaches. At all levels, coaches can teach you skills, but it takes longer to teach awareness and intelligence during play. By "studying" games on your own, you can increase your playing time immediately.

You can check out the Hurricanes' broadcast schedule at Carolina Hurricanes.
